The simplest stairlifts to install are those on straight staircases because they use a mass-produced straight stairlift rail which only needs cutting to the right length. Various modifications are possible, such as a hinged rail section at the foot of the stairs which can be manually or electrically lifted up when the stairlift is not in use. It’s ideal for installations where the bottom of the rail would otherwise protrude into a corridor or passageway and cause a trip hazard.

Running costs are very low, as the stairlift only draws mains power to ‘top up’ the high-performance batteries located inside the stairlift carriage. They are recharged whenever the carriage is ‘parked’ at the top or bottom of the stairs. Battery power (another Acorn innovation) means your stairlift keeps working if the mains power is cut, so you’ll never be left stranded part-way through your journey.
